Award for Exceptional University Management
Award Description:
This award recognizes and rewards outstanding University management by those who have the responsibility to supervise, guide, and lead others. The University's success is founded upon the contributions of the people who work at UCSF. Effective management of this invaluable resource—our people—that goes above and beyond the scope of an individual’s job and demonstrates outstanding “Great Manager” qualities is a critical skill and achievement to be recognized.
Eligibility Requirements for Nomination:
Nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Have a supervisor or manager title code, have been a career UCSF employee for at least five years as of December 31, 2012, and have a minimum 50% appointment at the time of nomination (questions regarding title code and employment eligibility must be answered by your departmental personnel assistant or your Human Resources customer service representative prior to submitting a nomination).

Have been nominated by their supervisor and endorsed by their department head.

Have not previously received the award.

Have exhibited and sustained outstanding management performance as delineated below by the "Selection Criteria.”
Selection Criteria:
Nominees will be evaluated per the following criteria:

Creativity/Innovation: demonstrates ability to develop new methods and approaches resulting in positive change and new standards of performance

Communication: demonstrates an ongoing commitment to communication, which is timely, honest, thorough, open, and sensitive within the University as well as between individuals

Customer Service: demonstrates and promotes quality service that is responsive to customer needs and provides satisfaction with products and services provided

Diversity: demonstrates respect for the variety of experiences and perspectives, which arise from differences in race, culture, religion, mental or physical abilities, heritage, age, gender, sexual orientation, and other characteristics

Ethics/Integrity: demonstrates a commitment to the highest standards of ethics and integrity demonstrated by leadership that is open, fair, honest, and consistent in dealing with employees and the campus community

High Performance/ Maximum Accountability: demonstrates personal achievement of high performance as well as effective goal setting, coaching, and performance management of others

Supportive Work Environment: demonstrates ability to implement programs and activities that create and provide a supportive work environment for employees, which enhances morale, enables productivity, and develops human potential

Teamwork /Collaboration: demonstrates acute ability in working together within and between groups to achieve goals and purposes common to the University’s strategic plan and priorities: patients, discovery, education, people, and business.
Required Nomination Materials:
Please submit a nomination packet either electronically or in hard copy containing the following documents:

Completed nomination form (see below)

A copy of the nominee's job description

Supervisor's objective statements about job performance, demonstrating the nominee's contributions related to the above “Selection Criteria” (specific examples per each criterion recommended). Please note: three pages maximum, submitted as either a formal letter or Supervisor Statements template (see below), will be accepted.

Two supporting letters from colleagues, customers, and/or subordinates who know the nominee's work performance and can give examples of exceptional management related to the above criteria. Please note: only two supporting letters, limited to two pages, will be accepted.
